EC Division 1, 2nd November 2014 – Match Report

Our second outing for EC1 took us to Letchworth.  The first match paired us with Farnham which proved to be a comfortable game for us, 5-0 up at half time, 11-0 on the final whistle.
This game was never in doubt, a solid defence with our attacking play and fitness too much for Farnham.  Goal scorers, Alex (4), Scott (2), James (2), Josh (1), Rees (1), Harry (1).

Next up, Bury B, a bright start from both teams with some nice exchanges of play between both sets of players.  It wasn’t until the 8th minute before Scott broke the deadlock for us, Harry doubled our advantage with a thumping shot taking us in 2-0 up at half time.  The second half was pretty much one way traffic as we added 6 more goals running out worthy 8-0 winners over a very weary Bury team.  Scott (4), Alex (3), Harry (1).

Our final and indeed final game of the day saw us take on Letchworth.   With both teams undefeated it was always going to be the game of the day.  Our confidence was high, not only were we undefeated, but hadn’t concede a goal in our previous two games.  The game started at a high tempo and quite simply never stopped.  A full ten minutes of fast and exciting hockey passed before the deadlock was broken with us digging out a goal from close range.  Letchworth responded with an equaliser 3 minutes later with the game now nicely poised 1-1 at half time.  The second half picked up from where the 1st half had left off with the third goal coming after another ten minutes very much as it had done in the first half, except this time the lead was taken by Letchworth.  A couple of minutes later we cancelled out their lead with a brilliant counter attack receiving applause from both sets of supporters.  With little more than 4 minutes left on the clock it was anybody’s game with both teams pressing for the winner.  As we entered the last 2 minutes a big call came from the referee, giving the advantage to Letchworth in the form of a penalty.  Reuben pulled off a brilliant save but was beaten at the second time of asking from a favourable rebound.  Despite every effort the equaliser never came.  Final score Letchworth 3 Soham 2.  Goal scorers, James & Scott.

A brilliant game of good quality and exciting hockey, with both teams giving everything, creating a great spectacle to end the day.
